Database play
by Chris on Apr.08, 2009, under Gaming in Tek, Uncategorized
Well……. Recently I decided to brush up on databases. Not only configuration, but hosting, optimizing, building, etc. I also wanted to make this an all around workout, so I picked a task that required not only database skills, but also programming, compiling, networking, scripting, and at least enough knowledge to turn any PC into a powerhouse.
So I chose the task of working with one of the most mutable databases possible, that of an MMORPG. For this task I chose MaNGOS as the source, since in it’s entirety, it has the complexity needed to presents most of the challenges I am seeking. Using the MaNGOS dev teams work, a person with some computer skill can challenge/teach himself a lot of valuable skills.
I will post the steps I utilize here for reference, noting source work where possible. Please note I make no statement of support for any particular software, nor do I hold any liability or responsibility for any of the following that you do (wrong) that breaks or renders your machine useless.
Your first stop in this project is either to Google MaNGOS, or go directly to their website at http://getmangos.com/community/ and setup an account to utilize their forums. Those forums and these subsequent posts will be an invaluable guide in the life of this project.
You will also need to install and know how to use the following:
Some form of SQL server, I am using MySQL.
Some from of SQL manager, I am using PhPMyAdmin and the command line.
Some form of GIT client, I am using msysgit.
Some form of Visual Studio, I am using Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition.
Some form of MMO game, I am using WoW client build 3.0.9
I will start my next post by installing all of these items and getting a comfortable and easy setup/method worked out. I will note any errors or problems also so as to help readers avoid them in the future.
